Gene Allison

Gene Allison (born August 29, 1934 in Pegram , Tennessee , † February 28, 2004 in Nashville , Tennessee) was an American gospel and R&B singer.

Career

Allison came to Nashville with his family at the age of seven, where he sang in the local gospel choir with his brother Laveert . While still in high school, he was hired for the quartet The Fairfield Four ; he later met producer Ted Jarrett and switched to secular songs. In 1957 he had his first hit with "You Can Make It If You Try", which reached number 37 on the Billboard Pop Charts. In the R&B charts, the track reached number 14. With Have Faith and Everything Will Be Alright , two more hits followed in 1958.

This success enabled him to open a restaurant, which he ran with his family until the end of his life. He died of liver and kidney failure in Nashville.
