Gene Mooneyham

Gene Mooneyham (born 1930 in Cameron , Oklahoma , † January 17, 2006 ) was an American dragster racer and technician.

Career

He became known with the Mooneyham & Sharp '34 Ford Coupe with the 554 on the doors. It became one of the most famous American racing cars.

Mooneyham ended his racing career in the 1950s after a car accident in San Diego . He was succeeded by Larry Faust , who repaired the car. The car won the Bakersfield race in its class in 1960 and won the Drag News Jr. Eliminator in 1962 and 1963.

In 1963, Mooneyham and Faust began building their own .44 model with Wayne Ferguson and Jerry Jackson and became the best dragster team on the US West Coast. In 1964 and 1965, Mooneyham was the boss of Jack Chrismans Comets.

At the height of his career, Mooneyham was an owner, engineer, designer, driver and businessman.

In 2001 Mooneyham was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and was honored by the NHRA with Lifetime Achievement Award in the 1996 NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion .
