General overhaul

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The general overhaul or general overhaul , English : general overhaul, complete overhaul or major overhaul , is a technical term mostly from the field of technology . This refers to the process in which a mostly technical device - such as a machine , a motor or a smartphone - is extensively and thoroughly checked, in which as a precaution - i.e. before damage occurs - wear-intensive parts are replaced and all identifiable defects are usually repaired in a precisely prescribed time interval .

For example, in a completely overhauled engine, all moving parts can be removed, checked and, in the event of a fault, replaced or restored. The general overhaul therefore clearly goes beyond the conventional check of functionality . In many cases, articles of this type are also marked as refurbished . Occasionally, the general overhaul is also associated with the start of a partial or full guarantee for the general overhauled product.

Other common terms for general overhaul are complete overhaul , retreading (for example with car tires ), refurbishment from the ground up , comprehensive refurbishment and complete reworking .

Examples

General overhauls - mostly by law - are required for power plants , ships , buses , alarm systems , security systems and medical technology .
