Engine repairs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The engine repair is the repair of an engine or internal combustion engine with the aim of restoring the properties and features specified during production. The term engine repair can refer to the repair of individual engine parts as well as the general overhaul of the entire engine. While the repair is purely about repairing the damage, the general overhaul also involves the idea of recycling old devices, which means that it is a contribution to product recycling or upcycling . Motors that have the RAL quality mark for motor repair are repaired according to clearly defined guidelines. They are often also available as replacement engines.

Areas of application

Engine repairs are necessary to maintain the functionality of an engine or engine-driven device. It is carried out wherever engines are used, for example in motor vehicles , diesel locomotives , ships or mobile and stationary units .

Types of engine repair

General overhaul

During the general overhaul, the engines including the ancillary units are completely dismantled and reassembled. Defective or worn parts will be replaced in the course of this. The quality of the repair essentially depends on the care and technical equipment of the company carrying out the work, for example whether there are devices for crack testing .

Basic repairs

A basic overhaul differs from a general overhaul in that only certain parts of the engine are repaired. According to the specifications for the engine repair quality mark, however, "at least the cylinder head , the crankshaft bearings or the crankshaft drive ( connecting rod bearings , cylinder liner ) must be repaired according to the state of the art."

providers

Engine reconditioning is offered by ordinary car workshops as well as specialized engine reconditioners. The term "engine reconditioner" is not protected. The members of the “Quality Association of Engine Repair Companies” have therefore given themselves a catalog of defined criteria that are regularly checked. Engine reconditioners often act as service providers for workshops that send in defective engines and in return receive repaired replacement engines. Many companies also concentrate on certain types of engines with their respective requirements, such as trucks , heavy marine diesel engines or locomotives.

Since with the complex structure of modern engines it is usually not clear to laypeople which work has been carried out according to which standards, the quality association of engine repair companies has developed a quality mark for engine repairs in cooperation with RAL, the German Institute for Quality Assurance and Labeling , which is a fixed, publicly visible one Specifies rules for carrying out the work. In addition, the member companies that belong to the quality association must undergo annual independent checks.

In addition to the RAL quality mark, which can only be implemented to a limited extent due to measures taken by the manufacturers, there is the VDI guideline 4084, which is implemented by the member companies of the associations. In the VDI guideline 4084, engine repair terms are presented in a legally binding manner for the first time.
