Exchange engine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Replacing the motor (short: AT-motor or ATM , also exchange motor or engine in the exchange ) is in the automotive usual -trade name for a repaired engine of a vehicle, which replaces an identical original engine. Existing standards in Germany are the RAL quality mark for engine repairs and the VDI guideline 4084. Engines with the designation “General overhauled engine according to RAL-GZ 797” are repaired according to strictly defined quality standards. For example, wearing parts are always replaced. If the engine has not been reconditioned, it is called a used engine.

Usually the term is not used for a new unit, but for a used engine that has been completely overhauled. For the replacement engine, a defective engine is repaired, for example by slightly boring and honing the cylinder , overhauling the cylinder head and replacing the bearings . However, the term “exchange engine” alone is not associated with any fixed quality criteria. Binding information about the engine properties is only provided by supplementary descriptions such as "original exchange engine" or "quality assured according to RAL-GZ 797".

The mileage is not adjusted to the previous mileage of the replacement engine, as the rest of the vehicle has already completed the displayed kilometers. In order to express the increase in value due to the other engine, the installation date and the previous mileage of the engine are given in the service booklet.
