The Fiscalía General de la Nación (FGN) is the Attorney General's Office and an independent public body in Colombia . It is headed by a General Prosecutor ( Procurador General de la Nacion ). The current prosecutor is Fernando Carrillo Flórez . The General Prosecutor's Office was established in 1991 on the basis of the new political constitution and began operating on July 1, 1992.
The Fiscalía , as it is commonly called, took over the tasks that the Dirección Nacional de Instrucción Criminal ("National Criminal Police Directorate "), which no longer existed , performed. The main task is to investigate and prosecute suspected perpetrators who have committed a crime.
The nation's attorney general is selected by the Supreme Court from a short list sent by the President of the Republic .
