The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation ( Russian Генеральный штаб Вооружённых сил Российской Федерации ) is the central body of the military command of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the main body of operational control of the Russian Federation .
In accordance with the decisions of the President of Russia (Commander in Chief) and the Minister of Defense, the General Staff manages the armed forces, organizes defense planning of the Russian Federation, mobilization training and mobilization, and also coordinates the activities of other troops, military and special formations in the defense field.
The Day of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia is celebrated on January 25.
In 2004, the main tasks and functions of the General Staff were clarified. As part of the administrative reform, a number of functions and tasks were deleted: administrative and economic. As part of the military reform initiated in 2008, the Ministry of Defense established two functional areas of responsibility: the first plans to deploy the armed forces, the second to deploy troops. A transition has been made to a three-stage principle of responsibility: the chief commanders are responsible for combat training, the general staff, combined strategic commands and formations are responsible for operational training. As a result of the transformations, the General Staff was freed from dual functions and became a full-fledged strategic planning body that organizes and manages the armed forces .

The main tasks of the General Staff are:
- Implementation of the strategic planning of the use of the armed forces, other troops, military formations and bodies, taking into account their tasks and the military-administrative division of the country;
- Conducting deployment and mobilization training for the armed forces, coordinating deployment and mobilization training for other troops, military formations and bodies, and monitoring the state of their readiness for mobilization;
- Coordination of the construction and development activities of other troops and military formations;
- Carrying out activities to maintain the combat and mobilization readiness of the armed forces;
- Transfer of the armed forces to the organization and composition of times of war, the organization of the strategic deployment and the mobilization deployment of the armed forces;
- Coordination of activities to carry out military registration in Russia, preparation of citizens for military service and conscription;
- Organization of secret service activities;
- Planning and organization of communications in the armed forces, determining the procedure for using and planning the use of the radio frequency spectrum;
