Genius Loci Weimar is an annual August festival for audiovisual art, video mapping and facade projections.

On the second weekend in August every year, action artists, video designers, media designers, architects and musicians come to Weimar to take part in the festival with their work. During the festival weekend, selected video projects will be played on three building facades in Weimar . Between 9:30 p.m. and midnight, international artists project their 15-minute contributions in the city center.

The most famous buildings to date have included the German National Theater (DNT), the Anna Amalia Library , the former Gauforum , the City Palace and the new Bauhaus Museum .

As an event of the Weimar summer and organized by MXPerience gUG (limited liability), an average of 50,000 visitors have come to the interdisciplinary festival since 2012.

competition

Artists from all over the world are invited to apply with their concept ideas for the Genius Loci Weimar Festival for video mapping and facade projections. The three best artistic works will be awarded prize money of 45,000 euros and will be presented at the festival in Weimar.

Every year, three artistically challenging and historically relevant facades in the city of Weimar are selected for the competition. We are looking for concepts that capture the spirit of the place with the combination of natural conditions and human creative drive.

The special prerequisites for the artistic work are to develop an independent visual language and not get lost in a historical retelling or in clichéd showmanship. The focus is on the “genius loci”, the spirit of the place, which is to be made visible with new media art techniques and thus adds another level of meaning to the place itself.

In order to participate, artists must submit their work in the format of a 30-second video clip. All competition entries will then be shown in a public traveling exhibition in Weimar. The three best works will be determined by a public vote on the website and by an expert jury.
