They mostly wore Spanish court clothes. Most of the members came from Italian noble families, many of whom had held functions in the papal family for a long time.

Through the Motu proprio with the title Pontificalis Domus of March 28, 1968 it became the Gentiluomini di Sua Santitá .

present

Today the Gentiluomini wear black tailcoats and a three-row gold chain of office, which is adorned with the papal insignia, the tiara and the crossed keys of Peter ( coat of arms of the Vatican City ).

The Gentiluomini in the Elenco ("directory") are, in contrast to earlier, mostly of bourgeois origin. The function is not inheritable and does not end with the pontificate of a Pope. The respective dignitaries are listed in the Annuario Pontificio , the papal yearbook. During their term of office, they also include the three highest-ranking officers of the Swiss Guard .

The nobles provide the immediate accompaniment of the Pope's visitors. During the one-to-one conversations, they look after the entourage of the visitor. This takes place both in the Vatican and in Castel Gandolfo . During solemn church services in St. Peter's Basilica , they assign the reserved seats to the guests of honor and members of the diplomatic corps . They are also helpful to the Pope at the weekly general audiences, events and concerts in the Vatican Audience Hall .

Pope Francis announced in 2013 that he had decided not to appoint a Gentiluomo di Sua Santità any more and thus temporarily overruled § 7 of the Pontificalis domus
