The Geodetic Institute Potsdam , GIP for short , was a traditional research institute in Potsdam that worked in the field of geodesy .

history

Established 1870–1917

The promemoria submitted by Johann Jacob Baeyer and Wilhelm Foerster to the Prussian Ministry of Culture on March 16, 1867 regarding the organization of an institute for advanced measurement leads to the establishment of the institute in Berlin in 1870.

Realignment 1917–1945

The Central Office of International Geometric Surveying as part of the institute will be closed due to conditions in the Versailles Peace Treaty. International participation in research projects is prohibited in Germany and thus also the institute. The restoration of international connections did not begin until 1924.

Period 1945–1969

From 1945 onwards, the institute in Potsdam was only responsible for the Soviet occupied zone (SBZ). From October 1946 it was affiliated to the German Academy of Sciences (DAW) in Berlin and is therefore largely independent of the state authorities that are responsible for state surveying in the Soviet Zone and later in the GDR.

Active as part of the ZIPE 1969–1991

In 1969 the institute became the research area of geodesy and gravimetry, remote sensing and geoinformatics as a fundamental part of the founding part of the Central Institute for Earth Physics , which was dissolved after the fall of the German Revolution in 1991.

Part of the GFZ after 1992

The library of the Albert Einstein Science Park is located in the main building of the Geodetic Institute, built around 1890 . In July 1999 the house was completely renovated and is now part of the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam . Today it is called the Helmert House . The astronomical-geodetic observatory is located about 100 m from the main building. Some of the ZIPE employees found a new place of work in the newly founded GFZ.
