Bardon studied law at the University of Sydney for three years before deciding to study art at the National Art School in Sydney , which he graduated from in 1966. He then taught at various schools before teaching in 1971 at the elementary school in Papunya, an Aboriginal settlement about 250 kilometers west of Alice Springs . Bardon produced three films and two books on Aboriginal art . He lived in Taree for 22 years with his wife Dorn and sons Michael and James.

Dot painting

From 1971 he worked as an art teacher in Papunya. There he convinced the Aborigines in Papunya to paint their stories of the dream time in 1971 and 1972. They first painted the honey pot ant mural on the school walls in Papunya after Old Tom Onion Tjapangati , the keeper of honey ant dreaming , gave permission for such a mural. The murals were removed due to a school's cleanliness regulation, but had a lasting effect. He encouraged painters to use wood and canvas substrates and brought them synthetic colors. Under these conditions it was possible to paint pictures on canvas and from 1980 the traditional patterns with lines were replaced by dots on the painting surface. This gave rise to the art style of dot painting. In 1971 the Papunya Tula Artist Cooperative was founded in the cultural area of the Western Desert . Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri , one of the most important painters of this school, transformed the traditional painting style into a commercial direction in this cooperative. Johnny Warangkula Jupurrula was one of the first to perfect this form of dot painting and to create iconographic elements that dissolve in the picture.
