Kokudo Chiriin
The Kokudo Chiriin ( Japanese 国土 地理 院 , before 1960 地理 調査 所 , Chiri Chōsajo , English Geospatial Information Authority of Japan , from 1949 to April 1, 2010 Geographical Survey Institute , GSI for short ) is a special body of the Kokudo- Kōtsū-shō (Ministry of Land and Transport of Japan). The task of the GSI is the surveying and mapping of the national territory of Japan . It is also involved in the standardization of geographic information and in the international efforts of the UN to standardize geographical names. In addition, the land surveying office creates cadastral maps , which serve as the basis for the taxation of municipalities, municipalities and prefectures ( 地方 交付 税 ). In addition, in accordance with the “Basic Law on Disaster Response” ( 災害 対 策 基本法 ) and the “Law in the Event of Armed Attack” ( 武力 攻 撃 事態 法 ), earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, disasters, or attacks on Japan, the Land Surveyors provide topographical data Information and aerial photography available. Research on earthquake forecasting
Stations with systems for magnetotelluric measurement were installed all over Japan after April 1996 and continuously record signals which are transmitted to the Mizusawa Geodetic Observatory and the Esashi station of the GSI. These stations measure the fluctuations in the earth's electromagnetic field associated with earthquake activity. The raw data thus collected from the monitoring stations will be made freely available to the scientific community to facilitate further studies of the interactions between electromagnetic events and earthquake activity.
The institute is represented on the National Coordinating Committee for Earthquake Predictions (CCEP).
In fictional works
The GSI played in the novel Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami a role as intended work of the roommate's the main character. At the time the novel was set in the late 1960s, the institute was still located in Tokyo .
