Georg August Zinn Prize

The Georg August Zinn Prize for promoting the rule of law , democracy and social cohesion in Hesse has been awarded every two years since 2002. The publisher is the Hessian SPD.

Background of the award

The award goes back to the namesake Georg August Zinn . Georg August Zinn was Prime Minister of Hesse from 1950 to 1969.

During his extraordinary tenure, the Prime Minister advocated a better distribution of freedoms and fought for better social security and equality.

Georg August Zinn's main goal was to bring people from different cultural and social backgrounds together. He promoted social integration and made sure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in prosperity.

Goal setting

The SPD in Hesse pursues the goal of preserving the memory of an outstanding politician who has campaigned for diverse, social and constitutional goals through the foundation of the prize. The prize is awarded to people who stand out for their legal and social science work in the fields of state and constitutional law , civil rights , democratic theory and the fight against political extremism .

The prize is endowed with 5000 euros.

  • 2002: Matthias Meusch received the award for his work “From Dictatorship to Fritz Bauer Democracy and the Approach to the Nazi Crimes”.
  • 2005: Johanna Kübler received the award for her work “The Pillars of the European Union: Uniform Basic Rights? On the fundamental rights divergence between the first and third pillars using the example of data protection ”.
  • 2007: Axel Ulrich received the award for his work "Political Resistance Against the Third Reich".
  • 2010: Steffi Jones received the award for special services to fairness and integration in sport and in society.
  • 2012: Jürgen Habermas received the award for his work as a philosopher and his work "On the Constitution of Europe"
  • 2014: Stefan Aust received the award for his research on the NSU scandal .
  • 2016: Iris Berben received the award for her public work for social cohesion and against racism and anti-Semitism.
  • 2018: Fritz Bauer Institute and Gerhard Wiese for their decades of work against right-wing extremism and the legal prosecution of the perpetrators of National Socialism.
