Telemann monument in Sorau

The Georg Philipp Telemann monument was unveiled on April 17th, 2010 in the center of the city of Stadtary (Eng. Sorau ) in the Lubusz Voivodeship in Poland.

It is set up on the promenade across from the art exhibition salon and depicts Telemann as a young musician playing the violin while sitting on a baroque garden bench.

The monument is the work of the sculptor Marek Szala from Zakopane and was created in collaboration with the local master Kazimierz Polak, who created the decorative garden bench. It was built on the occasion of the city's 750th anniversary on the initiative of the city administration.

Georg Philipp Telemann came to Sorau from Leipzig in 1704 at the invitation of Count Erdmann II. Von Promnitz as the successor to the court conductor Wolfgang Caspar Printz and stayed there for four years as the conductor of the court orchestra there.

Motifs from Sorbian folk music appear in his compositions from Sorau.
