Erdmann II came from the marriage of Balthasar Erdmann Graf von Promnitz with Emilie Agnes Countess von Reuss zu Schleiz (1667–1729). In 1703 he took over the rule of his father after his death. At that time he was already active as a privy councilor at the court of Augustus the Strong.

In 1705 Erdmann married Anna Maria von Sachsen-Weißenfels, the daughter of Duke Johann Adolf I von Sachsen-Weißenfels, and thus joined the high nobility. August the Strong also came to Sorau for the wedding. The young Georg Philipp Telemann became the new Hofkapellmeister this year , succeeding Wolfgang Caspar Printz .

Erdmann built up an elaborate court with valet servants and maids, a giant guard, etc. In 1710 he began building a new baroque palace next to the old palace. A new government chancellery, a stables, a riding school, a manorial pleasure house, cavalier houses, a hunting lodge and a baroque garden were built.

Count Promnitz also made the improvement of the school system his task. In addition to the establishment and maintenance of schools, he took over the salaries of teachers.

In 1733 he married again. In 1745 Erdmann II was killed by Austrian hussars.
