Count Georg von Werdenberg (* around 1430 ; † March 12/15, 1500 ) was Count of Heiligenberg, Sigmaringen and Veringen.

origin

Georg von Werdenberg came from the Werdenberg-Trochtelfingen-Sigmaringen-Heiligenberg line , a sideline of the Counts of Werdenberg and was a descendant of the Count Palatine of Tübingen through them . He was the eldest son of Count Johann III. von Werdenberg and Countess Elisabeth von Württemberg . One of his brothers was Count Haug von Werdenberg , another brother was Bishop Johann von Augsburg . Through the marriages of his sisters there were family ties to other noble families, such as the Counts of Montfort-Tettnang and the Swabian Counts of Zollern and the Lords of Abensberg .

Life

Georg entered the service of Margrave Karl I of Baden and was captured together with him in the Battle of Seckenheim in 1462 . He later gave a guarantee for his employer. On May 19, 1464, he married the Margravine Katharina von Baden , one of Karl's daughters from his marriage to Katharina of Austria and thus a niece of Emperor Friedrich III.

Georg had taken over the Grafschaft Heiligenberg from his father in 1459 and after his death also exercised the family senior council. He had good relations with Ravensburger trading capital . He was one of the councilors of Emperor Friedrich III. As deputy aristocratic captain, he supported his brother Haug in the organization and political direction of the Swabian Confederation . By 1476 at the latest, he entered the service of the Counts of Württemberg .

After his death, his property was shared among his three sons. In addition to the Grafschaft Heiligenberg, they also inherited the Counties Sigmaringen and the Veringen , but with them the family died out around 1534 in the male line.
