Georg Bussmann (* 1933 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German art historian , curator and professor of art studies. He is the author of numerous publications on contemporary art .

Live and act

Bussmann studied art history at the Universities of Bonn and Heidelberg . In the fall of 1963 he received his doctorate at the Philosophical Faculty under Walter Paatz . His studies were funded by the German National Academic Foundation. Then he was a volunteer at the Kunsthalle Mannheim .

From 1967 to 1969 Bussmann was director of the Badischer Kunstverein in Karlsruhe, where he caused a sensation through political and educational exhibitions. He said goodbye with the exhibition “Art and Politics”, which is described as legendary and which was also on view in Frankfurt and in the Kunsthalle Basel .

This exhibition was also his calling card for the Frankfurter Kunstverein , where he was elected director in 1970 - as the successor to Ewald Rathke . His much-discussed exhibition Art in the Third Reich - Documents of Submission , starting in 1974 from the Frankfurter Kunstverein, was then shown in five other large cities, including Basel, Wuppertal and Hamburg, and accompanied by extensive documentation.

From 1980 until his retirement, Bussmann was Professor of Contemporary Art in the Department of Art Studies at the Art Academy in Kassel .
