Georg Schönfelder

Georg Schönfelder (* 1911 in Silesia; † 1996 in Axien ) was a German honorary chess trainer.

Career

Schönfelder came to Axien in 1947 and actively played chess in the neighboring town of Prettin . At the request of the Axien teacher Kirste, he began to set up a chess group in Axien, so chess was played at the Axien school as early as 1947 after the end of lessons. Several teams were formed and trained weekly.

The children and young people he trained took part in up to 80 competitions a year, including a. in Falkenberg / Elster, Lauchhammer, Ruhland, Hoyerswerda, Gröditz, Halle, Wittenberg, Seiffen and Torgau the players of the " BSG Traktor Axien" were represented. The Axien chess players were regularly present at district and district Spartakiads as well as at the GDR exit in Neukieritzsch.

Georg Schönfelder worked as a chess trainer and organizer of chess tournaments for over 40 years. Generations of Axien students learned the royal game from him. Under his leadership, Axien became a "chess stronghold".

In memory of Georg Schönfelder, the chess tournament that takes place every year in Labrun bears the name "Georg Schönfelder Landopen". The tournament is hosted by SV Jenapharm EV and organized by the former Axien chess student Bernd Mißbach.
