George of Antioch

George of Antioch (* between 1080 and 1090 probably in Antioch ; † between April and August 1151 ) was a military leader and high court official under Roger II of Sicily.

Life

He grew up in what is now Tunisia , but later fled to Sicily , where he found employment with the local Count Roger II. After the death of Christodulos he became the leading employee of Rogers II as Ammiratus and was given the title ammiratus ammiratorum or archon tōn archontōn . In 1143 he donated the church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio in Palermo for the "memoria" of his family. As early as 1127 he founded the Greek monastery of S. Michele in Mazara . The Ponte dell'Ammiraglio in Palermo was built in 1132 on his behalf. In 1147 he began a raid and conquest through the Mediterranean, during which he conquered Corfu , Mahdia , Sfax and Soussa and besieged Constantinople in 1149 .
