The Salon Orchestra Cappuccino is a 1989 in Leipzig based ensemble devoted to the care of the salon music as a form of sophisticated entertainment music dedicated.

history

In 1989 some students got together at a festival to make music at the University of Music in Leipzig . Their common weakness for salon and coffee house music kept them together for a long time, and it came about with one of their teachers to found an ensemble that wanted to dedicate itself to this genre . The name "Salonorchester Cappuccino " was chosen because of the reference to the coffee house . Its director is the violinist Albrecht Winter .

After initially sporadic appearances at private celebrations, public concerts soon followed, and finally, from 1995 onwards, a regular series of concerts entitled “There's only one time”, named after the hit film by Werner Richard Heymann , which is heard at the end of each of these concerts. At first the concerts took place in the old trading exchange in Leipzig . In 1999, due to a lack of space, it was necessary to move to the Mendelssohn Hall of the Gewandhaus . The concert series with six concerts per season is now an integral part of the subscription offer of the Gewandhaus Leipzig. Due to the strong demand, it had to be extended to two dates per concert.

Most of the students at the time now sit in various orchestras or teach at music colleges. But they are happy to meet at the Leipzig concerts or on concert tours, such as classical music festivals in summer 2009 in Würzburg and Ludwigsburg or the Altenburg music festival and the Walkenried cloister concerts .

repertoire

The repertoire of the Cappuccino Salon Orchestra is very varied. It not only includes the popular melodies of the Viennese operetta or the German film hit, as well as the character pieces of coffee house music. On the one hand, it ranges from rarely performed arrangements of “serious classical music ” and operatic cross-sections to more swinging rhythms of American-influenced dance music from the 1920s, from musicals to titles by entertainment orchestras after the Second World War . The conductor's vocal interludes are also part of it from time to time.

The concerts, especially those in the “That's only once” series, each have a specific theme. Geographical regions, seasons, anniversaries, and many other occasions and circumstances can determine the selection. Composer portraits are offered under the title "For five o'clock tea at ...". Not only are pieces played by the caregiver, but references to predecessors and contemporaries are also made. Titles from earlier concerts are not repeated.

A trademark of the “Cappuccino Concerts” is the informative, witty and entertaining Conference Albrecht Winters.
