The Walkenried cloister concerts have been the annual music festival of the Walkenried monastery in the Lower Saxony district of Göttingen since 1983 .

The location of the Walkenried Monastery has been part of the Upper Harz Water Management UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010 .

Preliminary work

From 1980 onwards, extensive renovation and restoration measures began in the Walkenried monastery , whereby the cloister , which had been open until then, got its leaded glass windows . By installing warm air underfloor heating in the double cloister, this area of ​​the monastery could be used culturally for the first time all year round .

These building measures under the direction of the then senior district director Friedrich-Karl Böttcher, who accompanied the reconstruction until his retirement in 1999, laid the foundation stone for the cloister concerts.

history

The Walkenried cloister concerts were brought into being in 1983. The three classical concerts in the first season became a music festival with regularly up to 20 events. In recent years, in addition to the variety of concerts, there have also been literary readings with and without musical accompaniment . The genre now includes classical , salon music , gospel , folk , swing , jazz , a cappella and pop music .

Walkenried Monastery - Kreuzgarten

The demanding season starts in May and ends in December. Over the course of a year, two to four events are offered monthly in the double cloister of the Walkenried monastery and in summer also in the Kreuzgarten . Every season, up to 5,000 people attend the Walkenried cloister concerts.

From 1999 to 2014, Friedrich-Karl Böttcher was the artistic director . As of 2015, the Osterode am Harz district, as the sponsor, and the Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz Foundation, as the owner of the monastery, have given an advisory board the management of the concerts. For artistic director of Walkenrieder Cloister Concerts Thomas Krause was appointed.

Walkenried Monastery - Chapter House

The 32nd cloister concerts brought some innovations to the events. In 2015, for the first time, a concert meditation , an afternoon concert at 3 p.m. with coffee and cake, a concert in the chapter house of the monastery and a walking concert with a buffet were offered .

For the first time in 2015, the Walkenried cloister concerts together with the Cistercian Museum and the Central-Lichtspiele Herzberg am Harz organized the KINO IM KLOSTER - OpenAir in the Kreuzgarten. The cult film The Name of the Rose was shown combined with a themed tour of the places that also play a role in the film.

The location of the Walkenried Monastery has been part of the Upper Harz Water Management UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010 .

Sponsorship

The Walkenried Cloister Concerts have been a series of events since 1983 in the Osterode am Harz district in cooperation with the Walkenried Monastery Support Group . All events are only supported by the entrance fees and sponsors . Public funds are not used for this.

In 2015, the owner of the Walkenried Monastery property , the Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz (SBK) Foundation , took over responsibility for the cloister concerts from the Osterode district in the Harz region.

The Walkenried cloister concerts are sponsored by the Regional Association of Southern Lower Saxony .
