Christian Funke

Christian Funke (* 1949 in Dresden ) is a German violinist , concert master and professor of violin . Since 1987 he has been director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Bach Orchestra .

Career

Christian Funke, born in Dresden in 1949, studied at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden from 1959 to 1966 and then continued his studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Igor Bezrodnyi.

He has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions.

After his exams in 1972 he was engaged as first concertmaster at the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden . Since 1979 he has been the first concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra . As a soloist he played all violin concertos a. a. by Tchaikovsky , Beethoven , Brahms , Mozart , Sibelius , Shostakovich and Stravinsky with the Gewandhaus Orchestra.

In 1986 he was appointed professor for violin at the Liszt School of Music Weimar . He also held an honorary professorship at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig .

Since 1987 he has been director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Bach Orchestra . He played several times together with Igor Oistrach or Maxim Vengerov , double concerts by Johann Sebastian Bach . He was also able to win soloists like Sergei Nakarjakow for the ensemble.

As a soloist, he is often a guest at well-known orchestras and chamber music evenings or at music festivals such as the Walkenried cloister concerts .

Christian Funke plays a violin made by the famous Italian violin-making family Gagliano .
