Karl von Reitzenstein (General)

Karl Friedrich Ludwig Moritz Freiherr von Reitzenstein (born June 14, 1793 in Tützpatz ; † October 7, 1846 in Karlshall near Magdeburg ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 7th Landwehr Brigade.

Life

origin

Karl comes from the traditional Franconian Reitzenstein family , line Haus Unter-Schwarzenstein. His parents were the Prussian major general Heinrich August Friedrich von Reitzenstein and his wife Henriette Amalie Dorothea, born von Heyden-Linden (1771-1823). His brother Heinrich Hans Wilhelm (1796-1865) became general of the infantry .

Military career

On August 1, 1805 Reitzenstein came as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Unruh" of the Prussian Army , took part in the Fourth Coalition War and was made inactive after the battle of Jena . After the Peace of Tilsit he went to Mecklenburg-Strehlitz on June 4, 1808 and received his departure as a second lieutenant on March 10, 1810 . Reitzenstein returned to Prussian service and was employed in the 1st Silesian Infantry Regiment . In 1810/12 he graduated from the General War School and then joined the Silesian Grenadier Battalion. In the summer / autumn of 1813 he was briefly assigned to serve with Lieutenant General Friedrich von Kleist before Reitzenstein was transferred to the General Staff on December 24, 1813.

During the Wars of Liberation , he fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Dresden , Kulm and Leipzig , where he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class. He was also at the battles of Laon , Paris and Ligny . Reitzenstein received the Iron Cross 1st class for his behavior at Wavre . He also took part in the battles of Nollendorf, Etoges, Chapaibert, Neuilly, Mery, May and La-Ferte-Gauche. For the blockade of Erfurt he received the order of St. Vladimir IV class. At that time he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on July 5, 1814 and transferred to the General Staff of the 10th Brigade. On October 2, 1815, he was promoted to captain in the General Staff of the Troop Brigade in Magdeburg. There he was promoted to major on April 10, 1821 , and in 1823 transferred to the General Command of the IV Army Corps . On March 30, 1836 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on March 30, 1838 with a patent from April 7, 1838 to colonel . After a review before the king, Reitzenstein received a bonus of 500 thalers on September 15, 1838, and the Order of St. Anne II on October 5, 1838 . On March 30, 1844, he was promoted to major general. King Friedrich Wilhelm IV awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, on September 23, 1844 . Reitzenstein took over command of the 16th Landwehr Brigade in Trier on October 17, 1844 . At his request, he was released from this command and on February 24, 1846 appointed commander of the 7th Landwehr Brigade in Magdeburg . He died on October 7, 1846 in Karlshall near Magdeburg.

In 1838 Prince Carl of Prussia wrote about his chief of staff: “He is scientifically and well educated, strictly moral, very punctual in service and very familiar with the business of the corps entrusted to me, having been in it for almost 25 years. He sometimes suffers from the abdomen. "

Reitzenstein married Bertha Luise Albertine Countess of Chasôt (1801–1868), a daughter of Ludwig von Chasôt , on January 3, 1819 . The couple had several children:
