Martin Theurer (born November 8, 1954 near Bielefeld ) is a German jazz and improvisation musician ( piano , also drums, bass and trumpet ). His multi-faceted and rhythmically precise playing in the interior of the grand piano, which he was one of the first to develop in Germany, is characteristic.

Live and act

Theurer, who grew up in Wetter (Ruhr) , began playing the violin as a child ; as a teenager he switched to the trumpet, the piano and the church organ . At the age of 19 he became a member of the Free Jazz Group in Dortmund / Witten. He soon played with Peter Kowald , Paul Lovens and Erhard Hirt . On the recommendation of Alexander von Schlippenbach , who became aware of him at one of the Remscheid jazz courses , he was invited by Free Music Production to record in West Berlin. In 1979 he produced his solo album Moon Mood , which was recognized in the Jazz Podium as an “excellent record for piano fans and opponents of marathon improvisation studies”.

In 1980 Theurer appeared at the Total Music Meeting ; Duo recordings with Lovens and Schlippenbach followed. Since then he has played with a number of national and international musicians, for example in a quartet with Evan Parker , Radu Malfatti and Paul Lovens. In recent years he has repeatedly worked with musicians from the Ruhr area, the Cologne, Wuppertal and Wiesbaden improvisation scene, for example in a trio with Erhard Hirt and Thomas Lehn , with Uli Böttcher and Matthias Muche or in a duo with Philippe Micol , with whom he was at Traumzeit in 2010 -Festival in Duisburg.

Theurer teaches jazz piano and drums in Witten and at the Ruhr University in Bochum . For many years he headed the Bochum / Wittener Jazz eV, was artistic director of the Jazz Fest Bochum and curator at the JazzWerkRuhr.
