The Klenke Quartet is a German string quartet .

history

The quartet was founded in 1991 at the Liszt School of Music in Weimar . Since then, the line-up has remained unchanged. The four members live in Berlin and Thuringia . The quartet made its debut in 1994. The quartet received support from mentors such as Norbert Brainin ( Amadeus Quartet ), Ulrich Beetz ( Abegg Trio ), Harald Schoneweg ( Cherubini Quartet ) and Sándor Devich ( Bartók Quartet ). The ensemble was funded by the German Music Council and the German Foundation for Music Life .

The ensemble has performed at well-known festivals, including a. MDR Music Summer , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival , Harzburg Music Days , Walkenried Cloister Concerts and in 2003 accompanied the then Federal President Johannes Rau to South America . Concerts took the quartet to Iran , Japan and the Netherlands in 2018 .

From the very beginning, the quartet sought to work with fellow musicians. Partners included Martin Stadtfeld , Matthias Kirschnereit , Jascha Nemtsov , Kolja Lessing , Sebastian Klinger, Christina Fassbender, Clemens Trautmann, Alexander Bader , Nicola Jürgensen , Alexej Gerassimez as well as the Auryn Quartet and the Vogler Quartet . The members of the Cherubini Quartet Harald Schoneweg and Klaus Kämper added to the Klenke Quartet for the CD recording of Tchaikovsky's string sextet “Souvenir de Florence”. Harald Schoneweg (viola) also contributed to the recording of Mozart's string quintets.

Of the CD recordings, the Haydn recording “The seven last words of our Savior on the Cross” was awarded the “CHOC du Mois” by La Monde de la Musique magazine. The latest Schubert CD, published in the Movimentos Edition, received the 2015 “Supersonic Award” from the Luxembourg magazine PIZZICATO. Recordings of Mozart's string quartets had already received this award . The highly regarded MIDEM Classical Award of the Musikmesse in Cannes was presented in 2007 for another CD recording with string quartets by Mozart. The Harenberg Kulturführer Kammermusik 2008 recommends the recordings of the Klenke Quartet as a reference recording for some of these quartets. The recording of Mozart's string quintets with Harald Schoneweg (viola) also received high accolades: “Recording of the week” was the headline of the BBC (Magazin and Radio) and the Polish Radio judged “Best recording of Quintet KV 516”.

The quartet's repertoire also includes works for string quartet and orchestra by Arnold Schönberg and Matthew Hindson . The European premiere of Hindson's concert "The Rave and the Nightingale" took place in 2008 in Jena by the Klenke Quartet .

Special activities

The quartet will have two concert series of their own. The chamber music series AUFTAKT was founded in 2004 as a homage to the place where it was founded, Weimar , and regularly integrates musicians into the program. The Humboldt Soireen, a three-year concert series in the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle at the Humboldt University in Berlin , was also initiated and artistically directed by the Klenke Quartet.

A close connection with the German-American composer Ursula Mamlok , who died in 2016, led the Klenke Quartet to New York to perform her 2nd string quartet on the artist's 90th birthday .

Another focus is on children's and family programs to make the very young generation receptive to chamber music. The most recent program was the children's music theater “Die kleine Hexe”, which was presented in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf , the Cologne Philharmonie , the Philharmonie Luxembourg , Hamburg Laeiszhalle , the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden .
