The Bartók Quartet [Hungarian 'bɔrtoːk-] is a Hungarian string quartet , founded in Budapest in 1963 as the successor to the Komlós Quartet (1957–63). The repertoire particularly includes works of the Viennese Classic and Béla Bartóks as well as contemporary Hungarian composers .

history

The Bartók Quartet is the successor to the Komlós Quartet, which was founded in 1957 by students of the Franz Liszt Music Academy .

From 1963 the ensemble was named Bartók Quartet and had its first great success when it won first prize in the 1964 international string quartet competition in Liège . Since that time, the ensemble has become an integral part of the great chamber music podiums and is one of the leading string quartets worldwide.

The Bartók Quartet took part in international music festivals , but also outstanding celebrations such as the opening of the world-famous Sydney Opera House and Human Rights Day in New York at the UN .

In 1986 the ensemble received the Bartók Prize.

The recording of the six Bartók string quartets (ERATO / EMI ) was awarded the Grand Prix by European critics . Further recordings followed, including all of the string quartets by Beethoven and Brahms .
