The Göttingen Symphony Orchestra ( GSO ) is a symphony orchestra in the university town of Göttingen in Lower Saxony . It was founded in 1862.

history

Since its foundation in 1862, it has included outstanding artists such as Richard Strauss , Ferruccio Busoni , Max Reger , the Jochum brothers , Sir Georg Solti , Wilhelm Kempff , Gidon Kremer , Martha Argerich , Heinrich Schiff , Rudolf Buchbinder , Simone Kermes , Dimitri Ashkenazy , Niklas Liepe , Albrecht Menzel and others about musical companions of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra.

Frank Peter Zimmermann has been an honorary member of the orchestra since 2001 .

repertoire

The orchestra's repertoire follows all historical and stylistic directions - from the baroque to the present . Works by contemporary artists are also often presented. Numerous world premieres testify to the orchestra's great commitment to modernity .

Concert activities

The Göttingen Symphony Orchestra offers its audience a wide range of more than 100 concerts a year. It is firmly anchored in the cultural life of Göttingen and, as “the travel orchestra of Lower Saxony ”, it is an important orchestra in the Lower Saxony musical landscape. The orchestra is a regular guest at music festivals such as the Göttingen International Handel Festival , the Lower Saxony Music Days , the Harzburg Music Days , the Walkenried Cloister Concerts and the Weilburg Castle Concerts .

There are also successful guest appearances throughout Germany and in neighboring countries . In 2017 a tour led the orchestra a. a. to the People's Republic of China .

For years the orchestra has been dedicating itself to new visitor groups with great success. Concerts in kindergartens, schools, hospitals and retirement homes in and outside of Göttingen are offered and public rehearsals are held especially for the target groups of children, young people, the disabled and older citizens .

There are also numerous CD and radio recordings with the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra.

Prizes and awards

In recent years, the orchestra's diverse commitment has been recognized by several awards:

  • The German Music Publishers Association awarded the prize “The best concert program of the 1995/96 season”.
  • The live recording of the Apocalypse selon St. Jean by Jean Françaix on CD from 1997 received the highest rating from the French magazine Opéra International - “Le Timbre de Platine”.
  • For the CD recording of the "Russian Trumpet Concertos" with Reinhold Friedrich has been ECHO Klassik Award conferred, 2013.
  • The ECHO Klassik 2017 was awarded for the live recording of the CD “Russian Oboe Concertos” with Maria Sournatcheva .
