Christoph-Mathias Mueller (born February 26, 1967 in Chiclayo , Peru ) is a conductor who grew up in Switzerland . From 2005 to 2018 he was General Music Director of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra .

Life

Mueller studied violin in Basel and conducting in Cincinnati , Ohio . He then became a Conducting Fellow in Tanglewood , Massachusetts , and worked with Seiji Ozawa , Robert Spano, and Leon Fleisher . In 1996 Mueller became assistant to Vladimir Ashkenazy at the German Symphony Orchestra in Berlin . In 2000 Mueller won the International Conducting Competition in Cadaqués , Spain . From 2001 to 2005 he was assistant conductor to Claudio Abbado at the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra , and from 2003 to 2005 in the same position at the Lucerne Festival Orchestra . In the 2004/2005 season he was artistic director of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra . From 2005 to 2018 Christoph-Mathias Mueller was chief conductor and artistic director of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra , and since 2007 general music director. His engagement in Göttingen ended in summer 2018.

In addition, Mueller is often hired for international guest performances. In 2005/2006 he directed the French premiere of the entire ballet "Undine" by Hans Werner Henze at the Opéra national in Strasbourg . In 2010 he directed the new production of the bat at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow . He has also made guest appearances and conducted with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the SWR Symphony Orchestra , the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana , the Russian National Orchestra and the Ensemble Modern .
