Nicholas Milton
Nicholas Christopher Milton AM (* 1967 in Sydney , Australia ) is an Australian violinist and conductor .
Since August 2018 he has been the artistic director and chief conductor of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra .
Life
Milton studied violin, conducting, music theory and philosophy at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music , the University of Michigan , Mannes College of Music and the Juilliard School of Music . He holds a PhD in music from the City University of New York . Milton began his music career as a violinist and chamber musician with the Macquarie Trio. In 1996 he was appointed concertmaster of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra . Milton has been chief conductor of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra since 2001, and from 2004 to 2010 he was also general music director of the Jena Philharmonic . Since 2007 he has also been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra .
He conducted at the Volksoper Vienna , the Komische Oper Berlin , the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich , the Leipzig Opera House and the Sydney Opera House . He was also guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam , the Sydney Symphony Orchestra , the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana , the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra , the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the radio orchestras of the NDR , SWR , SR .
From 2014 to July 2018, Nicholas Milton was General Music Director of the Saarland State Theater . Milton has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra since August 2018 .
Awards
In 1999 Milton was named “Australian Conductor of the Year” and he was a prizewinner at the “International Lovro von Matačić Conducting Competition”. In 2001 he was awarded the Australian Medal of the Century for his social commitment and his activities to promote music. The Michigan State University awarded him 2014/15 from the College of Music Distinguished Alumni Award. In 2015 he was a member of the Australia-Germany Advisory Group at the invitation of the Australian Prime Minister. In 2016 he was honored for special services as a musician, conductor and artistic director with the inclusion in the Order of Australia (AM).
In 2016 he and the soloist Joseph Moog were nominated for a Grammy for a CD with piano concertos by Grieg and Moszkowski in the category “Best Classical Instrumental Solo” .
