The Weilburg Palace Concerts , founded in 1972, offer classical music at an international level in over 50 concerts at the Weilburg Palace annually in June and July under the patronage of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and Duke of Nassau . The awareness and popularity of the International Music Festival extends far beyond the borders of Weilburg.

Large orchestras, small ensembles, well-known musicians and up-and-coming young artists inspire the audience in the open air in the Renaissance courtyard as well as in the castle church , the upper and lower orangery and the old court room in the historical ambience of the castle. Cabaret events with music, jazz evenings, concerts - not only - for children and a baroque festival, the range of concerts naturally includes matinees , night concerts by candlelight and orchestral concerts. The program itself offers a mix of works from all eras . This has been compiled by the artistic director Stephan Schreckenberger since 2011 . He took over the artistic direction from Karl Rarichs, who was responsible for putting together the program from 1980 to 2010. The first artistic director was the Frankfurt music editor and conductor Hans Koppenburg (1932–2013) from 1972 to 1979.

The organizer is the non-profit association Weilburger Schlosskonzerte e. V.

The media partner of the Weilburg Palace Concerts is the Hessischer Rundfunk with its program hr2-kultur . The station broadcasts individual concerts across Europe (EBU). The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band can also be heard regularly with guest appearances at the Weilburg Palace Concerts.

About history

After the founding of the Weilburger Schlosskonzerte eV association in December 1972, the founding team around Johannes Meyer (1925–1998) started the first concert season in the summer of 1973 with 334 chairs and 4 concerts in the Renaissance courtyard. The patronage was the Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg and Duke of Nassau , whose ancestor Duke Adolph was the last private owner of the Weilburg Palace. In addition to the existing chairs, another 400 chairs were collected from churches and the grammar school. Those responsible had by no means expected that there would still be insufficient seating in this first year. Weilburg restaurateurs lent chairs to their guests, which they could take with them to the Renaissance courtyard after dinner - because those who brought a seat were still allowed to go to the concert. Some guests even removed car seats from their vehicles to attend the concert. In order to meet the great demand for tickets, the fourth concert had to be repeated on the following evening.

In 2018, the Weilburg Palace Concerts won the the concert and opera magazine Concerti ausgelobten Audience Award "audience of the year."

Currently around 30,000 visitors annually find their way to Weilburg for the palace concerts. In addition to a steadily growing regular audience, there are always a number of new music lovers who appreciate the atmosphere of this unique castle. The music lovers come from all over Germany, but also from abroad.
