Marco Thomas

Marco Thomas (* 1972 in Eilenburg ) is a German clarinetist and professor at the Bremen University of the Arts .

Life

He began to play the piano at the age of four and learned his first clarinet notes from father, grandfather and great-grandfather at the age of ten. After attending the special school for music in Halle (Saale) , he studied from 1990 to 1996 at the University of Music and Theater Leipzig in the class of Klaus Stöckel. During his studies he received the Gewandhaus scholarship in 1994 , became principal clarinetist of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in 1995 and received lessons from Wenzel Fuchs as a scholarship holder of the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic .

In 1997, at the age of 24, he took up the position of principal clarinetist in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and worked there until 1999. During this time he participated in numerous CD recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker under conductors such as Sir Georg Solti , Claudio Abbado , Daniel Barenboim , Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Günter Wand .

He was principal clarinet and founding member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and played among other things as principal clarinet in the Chamber Orchestra of Europe , the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the MDR symphony orchestra , the Bamberg Symphony and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

As a chamber musician and soloist, he gives concerts at international festivals, including recordings for radio stations in Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, including the clarinet quintets by Mozart and Brahms. He is a member of the “ Ensemble Punto It ” and the “ Salonorchester Cappuccino ” Leipzig. Since 2000 he has been professor for clarinet at the University of the Arts in Bremen . In 2005 he founded the “North German Clarinet Days”, of which he is also the artistic director.
