Georg von Breitenbach (* around 1485 probably in Leipzig , Duchy of Saxony ; † 1540 or 1541) was a legal scholar and chancellor in the Electorate of Brandenburg in 1540.

Life

Georg came from the von Breitenbach family in Leipzig. In 1501 he enrolled at the university there , and in 1506 in Frankfurt an der Oder . In 1517 he was a doctor of both rights and professor of civil law in Leipzig. During this time he also entered the service of Duke Georg of Saxony . His attitude to Luther worsened after his Leipzig disputation in 1519. In 1520 von Breitenbach became vice-chancellor of the Leipzig University, in 1525 a full professor (or vice-professor) of the law faculty and in 1526 an assessor in the Leipzig Schöppenstuhl .

Von Breitenbach supported Duke Georg in his anti-reformist efforts and took part in monastery visitations. In 1538 Luther called him a diabolical jurist . After the introduction of the Reformation in Saxony, Georg von Breitenbach went to Brandenburg, where he was briefly Chancellor under Elector Joachim II in 1540 . Soon after, he died.
