Georg von Gemmingen (Commander of the Teutonic Order)

Georg von Gemmingen (* before 1564, † after 1587) was Commander of the Teutonic Order .

Life

He was a son of Dietrich IX. von Gemmingen (1517–1586) and Lia von Schellenberg († 1564). He entered the Teutonic Order in Aschhausen in 1568, was Komtur in Mühlhausen in 1575 and Komtur in Freiburg in 1578. In 1579 he belonged to the embassy of Grand Master Heinrich von Bobenhausen at the Polish royal court to regain Livonia . From 1584 he was Komtur on the Mainau. During his time as Komtur on the Mainau, in 1586 the Church of St. Georg in Allmannsdorf and the special hospital for the outer fir tree in Constance were assigned to the Teutonic Order. Georg von Gemmingen had the special hospital renewed at that time. His coat of arms on the Swedish Tower on the island of Mainau also testifies to his building activity as the Mainau Commander . In 1587 he founded the Sebastian Brotherhood on the Mainau.
