Georg von Werthern , since 1702 Count von Werthern , (* July 21, 1663 in Beichlingen , † February 4, 1721 in Dresden ) was a minister of the Electoral Saxony .

Life

He came from the Beichlingen line of the Thuringian noble family von Werthern , which died out in the male line in the 20th century, and was the son of Friedrich von Werthern (1630–1686) and his wife Agnes Magdalena, née von Hessler (1637–1665 in Dresden) the Burgheßler house.

Georg von Werthern studied first at the University of Leipzig and then in Jena. He then went on an extensive educational trip to France and England. When his father was dying, he was called back. In the Electorate of Saxony, Elector Johann Georg IV appointed him chamberlain and in 1688 court and judicial councilor. In 1693 he was appointed by the vice superintendent of the sequestered electoral part of the county of Mansfeld. Just one year later he was appointed chamberlain of the Electoral Saxony. In 1695 he exchanged the post of vice supervisor of the county of Mansfeld for the office of chief captain in Thuringia, because his ancestors had already performed this function.

At the end of 1696 August the Strong appointed him to the Electoral Saxon ambassador at the Reichstag in Regensburg, which started Georg von Werthern's diplomatic career. In the following years he demonstrated his skills several times on the international stage. In 1698 he was inevitably promoted to the Privy Council. Due to his outstanding services to the empire and in recognition of the achievements of his ancestors, Georg von Werthern was raised to count for the empire and the hereditary lands by Emperor Leopold on August 12, 1702 when he skipped the baron title, and he was given the title of "high and well-born" for the empire and the hereditary lands were awarded and his coat of arms was improved through union with those of the lords of Beichlingen and Wiehe and the extinct von Rawenswald family.

In 1710, Count Georg von Werthern was appointed cabinet minister, making him one of the most influential people at the Dresden court. He had the previous Palais Kötteritz converted into Palais Werthern in the old town. He died there in the winter of 1721.
