George Borrow

George Henry Borrow (born July 5, 1803 in East Dereham , Norfolk , † July 26, 1881 in Lowestoft , Suffolk ) was a British writer , traveler and philologist .

Borrow was born in East Dereham, Norfolk. He was the son of Thomas Borrow (1758-1824), a recruiting officer, and his wife Ann Perfrement (1772-1858). He attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh and the Norwich Grammar School .

He studied law , although his main interests were literature and languages . In 1825 he began his first major European tour through France and Germany . He then visited Russia , Portugal , Spain and Morocco . He married Mary Clarke on April 23, 1840 and then lived in Lowestoft, Suffolk, where he wrote his literary works.
