George Heubel

George A. Heubel (* 1849 in the Kingdom of Prussia , † January 22, 1896 in Philadelphia ) was a German baseball player . He played the positions of first baseman and right fielder . He was the first German to play professional baseball in the National League .

Born in Prussia, Heubel made his debut in 1871 with the Philadelphia Athletics of the National Association , an early US professional baseball league. Heubel played 17 games in his first season, scoring 23 hits, 18 runs and a batting average of .307. To this end, he helped the Athletics win the NA championship with 21-7 games. In his sophomore season, he moved to the Washington Olympics , where he only played five games and his batting average fell to .130. Heubel then temporarily ended his career until he gave a brief one-game comeback in 1876 for the New York Mutuals of the newly formed National League (a part of Major League Baseball that still exists today ). He later worked for one season (1887) as a coach with the Allentown Peanut Eaters in one of the minor leagues .
