George Lang
George Lang (born July 13, 1924 in Székesfehérvár , Hungary as György Deutsch ; † July 5, 2011 in New York City ) was a Hungarian-American restaurateur.
Life
György Deutsch grew up with his Jewish parents, the tailor Simon Deutsch and Ilona Lang, in modest prosperity in Székesfehérvár . When Döme Sztójay became Prime Minister in March 1944, Lang's family was imprisoned in a labor camp. His parents were later murdered in Auschwitz, while György was able to flee after six months. He disguised his identity and joined the Arrow Cross as camouflage . When his identity was revealed after three months, Budapest was liberated by Soviet troops and György was charged with an Arrow Cross. After his acquittal, he took his mother's maiden name and moved to the United States with his cousin Evi in 1946.
He became a pioneer in advising restaurants. In 1970 he founded the George Lang Corporation and acquired the Café des Artistes in Manhattan in 1975 (closed in 2009). In 1992 he bought and renovated the well-known Budapest restaurant Gundel together with Ronald S. Lauder .
