George Machin (* the thirtieth December 1922 ; † 5. December 1989 ) was a Scottish politician of the Labor Party .

Political career

After the Labor politician George Thomson , who had represented the constituency of Dundee East in the House of Commons since 1952 , was appointed EU commissioner in 1973 , he gave up his mandate, which is why by-elections were necessary in the constituency. To this, the Labor Party machin as successor to Thomson. In the elections held on March 1, 1973 Machin prevailed with a share of 32.7% of the vote against the SNP candidate Gordon Wilson , who received 30.1% of the vote.

Machin subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time. He gave his maiden speech on March 8th. In the following elections in February 1974 Machin gained 1% of the vote, but was still subject to the SNP candidate Wilson, who received 39.5% of the vote. Machin consequently resigned from the House of Commons, but ran again in the elections in October of that year in the constituency of Dundee East. After Wilson won further votes, he missed the re-entry into parliament. Eight contributions are recorded from his eleven months as a member of parliament.
