George Provis

George Ernest R. Provis (October to December 1901 in Devizes , Wiltshire , United Kingdom ; † October 16, 1989 in Kitsap County , Washington , United States ) was a British film architect from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Live and act

Born in the last quarter of 1901 in the county of Wiltshire, Provis received practical training as a carpenter and worked in this profession for many years, most recently for British International Pictures at Elstree Studios. There he began to work as a film architect from the mid-1930s, initially for the cheaply produced so-called quota quickies. In 1946, the British film producer Sydney Box brought him to his company Gainsborough Pictures , where Provis henceforth designed slightly higher budgeted films in the Hammersmith Studios with film structures.

Under Provis's direction of the architecture department, a plethora of not too demanding entertainment films were made, sometimes only under his supervision (so-called supervising art director), including crime novels, costume and adventure material, war films, booze, horror films and dramas and melodramas. After over a hundred films, George Provis retired from the film business at the age of 75 and left his British homeland after the death of his wife Hilda (1901–1982). He moved to live with his daughter Pam in Washington State in the extreme northwest of the United States and spent his old age there.
