George S. Patton Sr.
George Smith Patton (born June 26, 1833 in Fredericksburg , † September 25, 1864 in Winchester ) was a Confederate officer in the Civil War .
Life
Patton, son of Governor John M. Patton , graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1852 . After the Civil War began, he served as a Colonel in the 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment and took part in various battles. On September 19, 1864, he was fatally wounded in the Battle of Opequon and died a few days later. His already issued certificate with the promotion to brigadier general could not be handed over.
He was the grandfather of George S. Patton .
