George C. Stafford Jr. (* 2. October 1950 in Harrisonburg , VA) is a US -American chemist , the ion trap has developed for the market.

Life

George Stafford studied at the University of Virginia in 1972 and completed his PhD there He worked as an employee of MS-manufacturing company in 1977. Finnigan MAT with the principle of ion trap (Engl. Trap ion , IT) at the beginning of the 1950s by German Nobel Prize winner Wolfgang Paul had been developed. It was not until the work of Stafford around 1983 that this product was ready for the market. With the modifications it was possible to store mass ranges of ions in the ion trap at the same time and to specifically release them from the " trap ". In addition, the Stafford group found that letting in helium at around 10 −5  Pa dramatically improved the mass resolution of an IT mass spectrometer. Stafford has been Director R&D at Thermo since 1999 and has been Director R&D LC / MS Hardware at Agilent Technologies since 2009 .

Stafford is married with three children.
