George J. Steinmann (born February 23, 1950 in Bern ) is a Swiss visual artist , blues musician , researcher and recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern (2011).

His artistic work includes photographs, installations, conceptual art, painting, object art, video art and drawings. He has been active as a blues guitarist in Switzerland, Europe and the USA since 1966.

By Hermann Hesse (1947), Alberto Giacometti (1965), Gottfried kicks (1986) and Ilya Kabakov (2000) George Steinmann is the fifth artist to whom the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Bern , the dignity of the honorary doctorate conferred. According to Mobiliar, he is “one of the most exciting cultural creators internationally who, as an artist, deal with issues of sustainability.”

Steinmann sees himself as a bridge builder between the disciplines. In this way, his works repeatedly reveal complex relationships and interactions. These relate to the natural sciences as much as to philosophy , to architecture as well as to nature, because, according to him, “social reality in the 21st century has become too complex for us to be able to afford the luxury of disciplinary simplification . That is why I support a transdisciplinary and holistic awareness with my works. "

Life

George J. Steinmann was born in Bern in 1950. He spent his childhood and school days in Thun . After a graphic lesson in Bern he studied painting at the Academy of Design in Basel and later in San Francisco painting, music and African American Studies at San Francisco Art Institute (u. A. At Angela Davis ).

From 1966 Steinmann was active as a blues guitarist with various bands, first in Switzerland and then throughout Europe . From 1970 to 1975 he lived as a musician and visual artist in Finland and from 1978 to 1980 in San Francisco.

Steinmann has lived and worked as a freelance artist, blues musician and researcher in Bern since 1980.
