George Stephen West

George Stephen West (born April 20, 1876 in Bradford , † August 7, 1919 ) was a British botanist (algae scientist). Its official botanical author abbreviation is " GSWest ".

Life

West was the son of the botanist William West . He studied at Bradford Technical College, the Royal College of Science in London and at the University of Cambridge (St. John's College). He taught at the Royal Agricultural College and later as a professor at the University of Birmingham . He died of pneumonia as a result of the flu epidemics during the First World War.

Like his father, he was a specialist in freshwater algae and he published with him in this area, for example a four-volume monograph on ornamental algae (Desmidiaceae) for the Ray Society. A monograph on British freshwater algae was continued by Felix Eugen Fritsch and published in 1927.

His brother William West junior (1875-1901) was also a botanist, but died young in India.

Honors

The algae genera Westiella Borzi and Westiellopsis M.Janet are named after him and after William West (1848–1914) .
