George Thomas (mercenary)
George Thomas (* around 1756 in Roscrea ( Ireland ); † August 22, 1802 ) was a British mercenary and known as the "Irish Raja ".
Life
George Thomas was born into poor conditions in Ireland around 1756. In Madras he deserted the British Navy, went to Delhi and entered the service of the Begum Samru . He later switched to Appa Rao, a maratha leader, and then conquered his own kingdom in Hansi in the Haryana region. His attempts to conquer the Punjab failed. Thomas was eventually defeated and captured by General Pierre Cuillier-Perron , commander of Gwalior's army . He died on August 22, 1802 on the Ganges .
