George W. Houston

George W. Houston (* 1941 ) has been a retired ancient historian and classical philologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) since 2005 .

life and work

Houston studied at Haverford College and graduated here successfully with a bachelor's degree in 1963 . From 1967 to 1969 he studied in Italy , supported by a Fulbright Grant and a Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome . In 1971 he received his doctorate at the UNC under his doctoral supervisor Thomas Robert Shannon Broughton on: " Roman Imperial Administrative Personnel During the Principates of Vespasian and Titus (AD 69-81) ". Since 1969 he worked at the Department of Classics at the UNC as an assistant professor (junior professor). After completing his dissertation, he got a job as Associate Professor (Extraordinary Professor) which lasted until 1976. From 1976 until his retirement in 2005 he was a professor in the Classics department of the UNC. During this time he rose to other positions within the university self-administration.

He was elected three times to leadership positions at the Vergilian Society of America between 1972 and 1983 and was director of the Classical Summer School of the American Academy in Rome from 1977 to 1979 . In autumn 1982 he was visiting professor at the University of Bologna . Between 1983 and 1991 he was co-editor of the Classical Journal . There are also numerous other committee activities and memberships.

Houston's research interests include Latin literature and Latin epigraphy , Roman technology . He dedicated numerous works to the Roman libraries, archives and book collections.
