The George Church (Polish Kościół pod wezwaniem św. Jerzego ) the city Białogard ( Belgard ) in Polish West Pomeranian Voivodeship is at ul. Świdwińska and is the second oldest church in the former three churches of this city. It dates from the 14th century.

Building description

The Belgarder Georgenkirche, oriented from east to west, is a Gothic building that was built in brick with a massive tower and polygonal choir closure . In the tower there is a pointed entrance and inside the church there is a rich buttress with also pointed window openings. An arcade frieze twists around the outside of the church.

history

The Georgenkirche stands on the spot where a chapel - allegedly consecrated by Bishop Otto von Bamberg - used to stand . This chapel is said to have been built where a pagan temple once stood.

The church was built outside the city wall - in the west, opposite the Jakobikirche, which was later built in the east of the city, which collapsed due to dilapidation and whose successor, the Petrikirche from the 17th century, was demolished at the beginning of the 1960s.

In 1858 the Georgenkirche was fundamentally rebuilt. Further renovations were made in 1925 and 1928.

At no time was the George Church its own parish church, but rather was assigned to the Marienkirche . The pastors of the Marienkirche also had to perceive the preaching service in the Georgenkirche. It was here that secondary and parallel services took place, and it was particularly often used for funerals on the occasion of funerals in the nearby cemetery.

As a result of the war , the George Church was expropriated as a Protestant church in favor of the Catholic Church in Poland . In 1946 the last German pastor who remained in Belgard, Superintendent Johannes Zitzke, had celebrated a confirmation service in it with the German parishioners still living in Belgard .

Today the Catholic Church makes the George Church available to Protestant Christians for worship purposes. The pastor of the parish Koszalin ( Köslin ) in the diocese of Pomerania-Greater Poland of the Polish Evangelical-Augsburg Church regularly holds church services here for parishioners from the Białogard catchment area, at regular intervals also in German.
