St. George

The Georgenkirche is a listed church building on Askanische Strasse in Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The first documentary mention comes from the year 1402. In the Middle Ages a hospital was built on this site in front of the city walls, the infirmary .

In 1512 the chapel and hospital were renewed and consecrated to the patron saint of lepers, St. George. From 1712 to 1717, Prince Leopold , the “Old Dessauer”, had it replaced by a new church in the Baroque style. In 1818–1821 the building was expanded with a portico and a sacristy. The builder was Carlo Ignazio Pozzi .

On March 7, 1945, the church burned to the ground during the heaviest bombing raid on Dessau . From 1961 to 1966 it was rebuilt in its original oval shape. Parts of the Pozzi extensions were removed.

architecture

The transverse, elliptical central building is a plastered building with a portal projection and triangular gable. The west tower with pilasters and Corinthian capitals is completed by a dome with a point.

Todays use

Today the building with its outbuildings is used by the St. Georgen community. In addition to the worship service, the focus is on pastoral care, youth work, senior dance, etc.
