Georges-Émile Tanguay
Georges-Émile Tanguay (born June 5, 1893 in Québec , † November 24, 1964 ibid) was a Canadian organist, music teacher and composer.
Tanguy initially took lessons in Quebec with Joseph-Arthur Bernier , Arthur Letondal and Romain Pelletier . From 1912 to 1914 he studied organ with Louis Vierne and harmony with Félix Fourdrain in Paris . During a renewed stay in Paris in 1920 he studied the organ with Édouard Mignan , harmony and counterpoint with Georges Caussade and piano with Simone Plé-Caussade and attended Vincent d'Indy's composition class at the Schola Cantorum . He then took organ lessons with Pietro Yon and Gaston Dethier in New York.
In 1925 he returned to Canada and became organist at the De l'Immaculée-Conception church in Montreal. From 1943 he taught harmony at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec and at the Université de Montréal ; there he later gave organ lessons. His students included u. a. Marcel Beaulieu , Jeannine Bégin , Léon Bernier , Maurice Blackburn , Marcel Laurencelle , the sisters Gilberte , Marcelle and Magdeleine Martin , Lucien Martin , Paul-Émile McCaughan , André Mérineau , Renée Morisset and Micheline Tessier .
Tanguay's little extensive compositional work includes piano and organ pieces, some choral works, an orchestral arrangement and an original orchestral work.
