Georges-Vanier is a subway station in Montreal . It is located in the Arrondissement of Le Sud-Ouest at the intersection of Rue Saint-Antoine and Boulevard Georges-Vanier. Trains on orange line 2 run here . In 2006, 736,976 passengers used the station; this corresponds to the 64th place among the 68 stations of the Metro Montreal .

Building

Architect Pierre-W. Major designed the station in a postmodern style. There are predominantly oblique instead of right angles in order to visually loosen up the large interior. Dark gray and deep blue bricks adorn the walls and contrast with the pale gray concrete. The distribution level constructed as a bridge also has an irregular shape. The platform level at a depth of 17.7 meters has two side platforms . On the surface, a pavilion made of glass and concrete serves as the station building, while next to it a light shaft in the shape of a truncated cone lets the daylight shine down.

The distances to the neighboring stations, measured from station end to station start, are 758.60 meters to Lionel-Groulx and 530.60 meters to Lucien-L'Allier . Georges-Vanier is the only metro station in Montreal that is not connected to the Société de transport de Montréal bus lines . Nearby is the Center canadien d'architecture , the Canadian architecture museum.

Concrete sculpture Un arbre dans le parc by Michel Dernuet

An oversized sculpture serves as an eye-catcher on the northern platform . The work Un arbre dans le parc (“A tree in the park”) by the sculptor Michel Dernuet is a concrete column that rises 12.8 meters and has the shape of a tree in an abstract way. The "trunk" supports the ceiling, while lamps hang from the "branches" to illuminate the platform and distribution level.

history

The station opened on April 28, 1980, along with the section between Bonaventure and Place-Saint-Henri . The namesake is the Boulevard Georges-Vanier, named after Georges Vanier , the Governor General of Canada from 1959 to 1967. He was born in a house a few meters from the later station and was the first French Canadian to hold the office of Governor General.
