Georges Cain

Georges Jules Auguste Cain (born April 16, 1856 in Paris ; † March 4, 1919 there ) was a French painter ( history painting ).

Life

Cain came from a family of artists: his grandfather Pierre-Jules Mène and his father Auguste-Nicolas Caïn were sculptors, his brother Henri writers.

After receiving artistic lessons from his father, Cain was at the École des Beaux-Arts (EBA) at an early age and was a student of Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Georges Vibert . Later he learned in the studio of Édouard Detaille . With the support of his teachers, Cain was able to take part in the annual exhibition of the Salon de Paris in 1878 . Highly praised by the public as well as by official art critics, he took part in almost every one of these annual exhibitions until 1900.

In addition, he was able to achieve great success as an illustrator over the years. In 1897 Cain was appointed curator of the Musée Carnavalet and as such he wrote several non-fiction books.

Six weeks before his 63rd birthday, Georges Cain died on March 4, 1919 in Paris, where he found his final resting place.

Honors

The Square Georges Cain in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris bears his name in his honor.
